LOCAL DENTIST NAMED "CHAMPION OF HEALTH"
Harris Nielsen Done, D.D.S.

The HealthCare Foundation for Orange County, a local health philanthropy, has named Dr. Harris Done as the 2002 "Champion of Health" for his work in providing access to dental services to local children. The award provides a $5,000 grant in Dr. Done's honor to a local healthcare charity of his choice. He has selected Ayuda, Inc. to receive this gift. Ayuda is a non-profit organization that provides free dental care for school-age children in Orange County and throughout Latin America.

Dr. Done and three other nominees were recognized before their peers at an Orange County Dental Association Continuing Education meeting. Dr. Done's work in improving access to dental services, as well as efforts within his capacity as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Southern California to provide quality oral healthcare to low-income Orange County residents, were among the reasons for his selection as this year's recipient of this honor.

Other nominees included Dr. Koren Borland, Dr. Jeffry Persons and Dr. Frank S. Yorita. In presenting the award, Foundation CEO Susan G. Zepeda noted that all candidates had "gone beyond the realm of their own clinical practice to bring improved dental health and hope to low-income families, and to make Orange County a healthier community in which to live."

Zepeda noted, that the 2002 survey of the Orange County Health Needs Assessment reports that only 40% of children under six years old have ever visited a dentist. In addition, the latest Report of the Surgeon General on Oral Health in America cites oral disease as the number one health problem of children in this country and the number one reason children miss school.

The HealthCare Foundation for Orange County, in its fourth year, is funded by gifts and bequests from individuals and by the net proceeds of the sale of United Western Medical Centers. Its mission is to promote health and support healthcare for the benefit of the Orange County community. The Foundation's hope in sponsoring this award is to express appreciation for the dedication of the honored oral physicians and encourage others to take on the dual challenges of charity care and community prevention efforts in today's challenging financial environment.
