NEW FUNDS TARGET OUTREACH,
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
HealthCare Foundation for Orange County has funded four local programs offering innovative strategies to reach underserved, low-income women in Orange County with information, screening and treatment services for breast cancer.
This funding initiative is intended to help overcome barriers to breast cancer prevention, education and care in Orange County due to cost, location and hours of operation of services, and to address linguistic and cultural concerns.
The programs funded are: Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center ? The Center?s project targets needy Chinese women age 40 and over, offering culturally sensitive and linguistically competent services including prevention education, screening and treatment support. ($15,000)
New Millennium Community Coalition ? The ?Celebrate Inner Beauty? program brings information on cancer risk and breast self examination to African-American women, through beauty salons and other community sites. ($3,750)
Orange County Korean American Health Information & Education Center ? This project provides breast cancer screening, outreach and education for Korean American women of all ages. ($10,000)
Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation ? Funds provided to the Komen Foundation are earmarked for services to women under age 40, who are uninsured for breast cancer screening or treatment. ($6,250)
The HealthCare Foundation?s Board Chairman, Marven Howard, indicates these grants, the first from the Foundation?s Gold Fund, ?underscore the Foundation?s commitment to helping needy families in Orange County obtain access to health care services.? Foundation Director, Susan Zepeda, explains that the ?Gold Fund? is the portion of Foundation resources made up of bequests and gifts from living donors, who share the Foundation?s vision of improving the health of the Orange County community.
